Are Adjustable Dumbbells Worth It?
Adjustable dumbbells cost less than buying every fixed pair when you want many weights, and more than a pair or two. On prices read on 2026-11-07, Bowflex's 552 is shown at $399 against $1,299.90 for ten REP Fitness pairs from 5 to 50 lb, before any stand or rack.
What this page does and does not do
MudderElla did not test any dumbbell. This page compares prices that the makers' own pages showed on 2026-11-07 and shows each step of the arithmetic. It covers the weights listed in each comparison and leaves out shipping, tax, and any stand or rack you may need, except where a line says it adds one. It is part of the wider best home gym guide, and the adjustable dumbbell comparison lists every option read.
Bowflex's pages were showing a promotion that ends 11/14, so its prices are written as shown and listed. REP Fitness and Ironmaster prices are as the pages showed them with no promotion applied.
The question to answer first
Whether adjustables are worth it depends on how many different weights you will really use. One or two weights favour a fixed pair, because a single REP pair is cheap: its page shows a 25 lb pair at $129.99 and a 50 lb pair at $214.99. Ten or more weights favour an adjustable system, because the fixed total grows with every pair. The arithmetic below puts numbers on that.
Scenario 1: ten weights from 5 to 50 lb
REP Fitness's page, which says sets come in 5 lb increments, shows these pair prices:
| Pair | Price |
|---|---|
| 5 lb | $39.99 |
| 10 lb | $54.99 |
| 15 lb | $74.99 |
| 20 lb | $94.99 |
| 25 lb | $129.99 |
| 30 lb | $149.99 |
| 35 lb | $164.99 |
| 40 lb | $179.99 |
| 45 lb | $194.99 |
| 50 lb | $214.99 |
Adding them in order: $39.99 + $54.99 = $94.98; + $74.99 = $169.97; + $94.99 = $264.96; + $129.99 = $394.95; + $149.99 = $544.94; + $164.99 = $709.93; + $179.99 = $889.92; + $194.99 = $1,084.91; + $214.99 = $1,299.90.
So ten fixed pairs from 5 to 50 lb come to $1,299.90 on REP's page. REP's page also shows a 5 to 50 lb set at $1,099.99, and says a set comes in 5 lb increments but does not print the exact piece list in the text read.
Bowflex's 552 covers 5 to 52.5 lb, and its 15 settings include all ten of the weights above. The page shows it at $399 and lists it at $479, as a pair.
- $1,299.90 minus $399 = $900.90 more for fixed pairs than the 552 at the shown price.
- $1,299.90 minus $479 = $820.90 more at the listed price.
- $1,099.99 minus $399 = $700.99 more for REP's set than the 552 at the shown price, and $1,099.99 minus $479 = $620.99 at the listed price.
Scenario 2: seventeen weights from 10 to 90 lb
The 1090 has 17 settings from 10 to 90 lb. Using REP's pair prices from the table above for 10 to 50 lb, that is $1,299.90 minus the 5 lb pair at $39.99, or $1,259.91. For 55 to 90 lb REP's page shows $259.99, $279.99, $299.99, $319.99, $339.99, $359.99, $379.99 and $399.99, which add to $2,639.92. The ten-to-ninety total is $1,259.91 + $2,639.92 = $3,899.83.
Bowflex shows the 1090 at $649 and lists it at $799.
- $3,899.83 minus $649 = $3,250.83 more for fixed pairs at the shown price.
- $3,899.83 minus $799 = $3,100.83 more at the listed price.
Scenario 3: a 75 lb range
Ironmaster's page prices a Quick-Lock set at $699 for 5 to 75 lb in 2.5 lb steps, with its standard 45 lb set at $499. Adding REP's pairs for 55 to 75 lb ($259.99, $279.99, $299.99, $319.99 and $339.99, total $1,499.95) to the $1,299.90 above gives $2,799.85 for 5 to 75 lb in 5 lb steps. REP's page shows a 5 to 75 lb set at $2,279.99.
- $2,799.85 minus $699 = $2,100.85 more for fixed pairs.
- $2,279.99 minus $699 = $1,580.99 more for REP's set.
Ironmaster's price is for the set of two handles and the plates listed on its page, so it is compared here as a set to a set.
Spread over three years
If you use one system for three years and ignore resale, the cost per year is the price divided by three. This is a simple division, not a forecast.
- Bowflex 552 at $399: $399 / 3 = $133.00 a year. At $479: $479 / 3 = $159.67 a year.
- REP 5 to 50 lb set at $1,099.99: $1,099.99 / 3 = $366.66 a year.
- Ten REP pairs at $1,299.90: $1,299.90 / 3 = $433.30 a year.
The division shows where the money goes, not whether you will use the weights.
What the arithmetic leaves out
- Stands and racks. Bowflex's stands are $199 and $179 and are listed as sold separately. Adding the $199 stand to the 552 at the shown price gives $399 + $199 = $598. REP's rack is $209.99 and is not included with the dumbbells, so ten fixed pairs plus a rack is $1,299.90 + $209.99 = $1,509.89, and REP's set plus a rack is $1,099.99 + $209.99 = $1,309.98. Ironmaster's stand for its Quick-Lock is $169, so $699 + $169 = $868.
- Shipping and tax. Not included anywhere. PowerBlock's announcement bar says free shipping on residential orders in the contiguous 48 states, REP's page says free shipping, and Bowflex's shipping charges are in a modal that was not read.
- Returns. Bowflex's return policy lists return shipping costs of $155 and a processing fee of up to 20%. PowerBlock's refund policy lists a 20 percent restocking fee. This page prints no REP return policy, because REP's product page and its returns page disagree.
- Upgrade costs. PowerBlock's Pro 100 EXP prices each stage by pair: $539 (40 lb), $758 (60 lb), $977 (80 lb) and $1,196 (100 lb). The step from 40 to 100 lb is $1,196 minus $539, or $657.
Space
Bowflex states each 552 dumbbell at 16.9 x 8.3 x 9 in and each 1090 dumbbell at 17.5 x 9.5 x 10 in. Ironmaster states 6.7 in square by 14.5 in long at 75 lb. REP's page, as read, gave no dimensions. Ten fixed pairs need somewhere to sit and REP's page says a rack is not included, which is part of why the stand-or-rack line matters. For machines rather than weights, the compact home gym guide lists stated footprints.
Speed of changing weights
The makers' claims are the only evidence here. Bowflex's explore page FAQ says adjustments are "nearly instant", and Ironmaster's page says plates change in just seconds and, for its add-on kit, in under 30 seconds. PowerBlock's page says a magnetic pin allows quick weight changes. Fixed pairs have no change step but need you to put one pair down and pick another up. This site did not time any system.
Durability and warranty
This site makes no durability claim. The makers' warranty statements are what the pages show: Bowflex, parts 2 years on the 552 and 3 years on the 1090; PowerBlock, a 5-year residential warranty on the Pro 100 EXP; Ironmaster, lifetime for structural and functional components, home use only; REP, lifetime for dumbbells in home use and 1 year for commercial. Warranties differ in what they cover, so read the maker's page before relying on any of them.
When fixed pairs make more sense
- You use one or two weights, such as a 20 lb pair for most work.
- You want no adjustment step at all.
- You have a rack already.
When adjustable dumbbells make more sense
- You want many weights and have limited floor space.
- You expect to move up in weight over time.
- You would rather buy one system than a pair at a time.

FAQ
Are adjustable dumbbells cheaper than buying fixed pairs?
For ten weights from 5 to 50 lb, on prices read on 2026-11-07, yes: Bowflex's 552 is shown at $399 against $1,299.90 for ten REP pairs. For one or two weights, a fixed pair costs less.
Do the totals include shipping, a stand or a rack?
No. The totals cover the weights listed and leave out shipping, tax and any stand or rack. The stand and rack lines are added separately above.
Do adjustable dumbbells break more easily?
This site has no evidence either way and did not test any dumbbell. The makers' warranties are listed above.
How should I decide how many weights I need?
Count the exercises you plan to do and the weight you would use for each. If the list has three or four different weights, compare against buying those pairs alone using the REP table above.
