Hydrow vs Ergatta
Hydrow and Ergatta differ most on membership and resistance. Hydrow says its $50 monthly membership should not be treated as optional and uses electromagnetic drag; Ergatta says membership is not required and uses water. On the pages read on 2026-11-02, three years costs $3,795 for Hydrow Wave and $3,603 for Ergatta Luxe on monthly plans.
MudderElla read both companies' own pages on 2026-11-02 and compares them here with the three-year cost worked out in plain arithmetic. This page feeds our hub, best rowing machines for home. It does not name a winner, because on several rows the pages read do not separate the two machines.
The decisive table
Prices are the figures each company's page showed on 2026-11-02. Three-year cost is the machine price plus 36 months of membership, with no shipping, tax or accessories. The Hydrow column is the Wave, its smaller model; the other Hydrow models follow the table.
| Hydrow Wave | Ergatta Luxe | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $1,995 MSRP, which Hydrow says may change | Shown at $2,199; the page also shows $2,499 |
| Membership | $50 a month, "for the whole household" | Plans of 1 year $390, 3 years $1,044, 5 years about $1,620; a monthly list of about $39 (derived) |
| Without membership | Just Row mode with "very limited functionality" | Just Row mode, real-time metrics, Strava and Apple Health, music |
| Three-year cost, monthly plan | $3,795 | $3,603 |
| Three-year cost, other route | Not applicable | $2,199 without membership; $3,243 with the 3-year plan |
| Resistance | Electromagnetic drag, in Hydrow's description | Water, which Ergatta calls naturally adjusting |
| Size and weight | 80 x 19 in; 102 lb | Length and width not stated on the pages read; 106.5 lb with water |
| User limits | Weight limit and height range not found on the pages read | Up to 6 ft 8 in or 40 in inseam, and 500 lb |
| Warranty | Five years on the frame; 12 months on components, screen, electronics and labor | Screen 1 year; parts 3 years; wood frame 5 years |
| Trial | 30-day home trial | 30-day risk-free trial |
The Ergatta monthly figure is derived: its membership page shows the 3-year plan at $1,044 against a previous $1,404, and $1,404 divided by 36 months is $39. The 5-year figure is arithmetic too, at $27 a month for 60 months. The gap between the two monthly-plan totals is $192; Ergatta's 3-year plan brings its total to $3,243, which is $552 below the Hydrow Wave total.
What the membership rows really say
The membership rows are where the two companies state opposite things in their own words.
Hydrow's FAQ says membership "should not be considered an optional part of purchasing." Without it, the rower runs in Just Row mode: you can adjust drag, see on-screen metrics and use Bluetooth heart-rate during workouts. The FAQ lists what is not available: workout videos, music, stored progress, saved stats, weekly racing, the leaderboard and mobile streaming. So the $1,800 of membership over 36 months belongs in the Hydrow cost.
Ergatta's FAQ answers the same question the other way: "No, an Ergatta membership is not required to use the rower." Without it you keep Just Row mode, metrics, music and connections to apps such as Strava and Apple Health. The confirmed rows do not itemize what you give up without it. If you choose membership, Ergatta's plans run from 1 year at $390 to 5 years at about $1,620.
Hydrow's other models
Hydrow's FAQ lists three rowers, Origin, Wave and Arc. The Arc is $2,295. The Origin is listed at $2,195 MSRP in the FAQ and shown at $1,895 on the Wave page. On the same arithmetic, three years costs $3,695 for the Origin at the shown price and $4,095 for the Arc. Both are 86 x 25 in. The Wave is the smallest and lightest, so the table uses it; the full lineup is on the Hydrow review.
Pick by situation
Each pick names the cell it rests on. Where the cells do not separate the two machines, it says so.
Coached classes with a membership you accept. Hydrow's Wave page lists "6,000+ workouts" and "100 Places" in Hydrow's own words, and says the membership is part of the experience. InsideHook (page dated 2025-06-26) described engaging instructor-led classes and noted the subscription as a large long-term cost. BarBend (page last updated 2024-11-17) says Ergatta has no virtually coached rows and suits people who want game-style competition. If instructors matter most to you, the pages point to Hydrow.
Wanting to keep options open on membership. Ergatta's own FAQ says the rower works without one, and its total with no membership is $2,199. Hydrow's total always includes membership, by Hydrow's own wording. If you may stop paying monthly fees later, the cells point to Ergatta.
A longer plan to lower the monthly rate. Ergatta publishes 1-, 3- and 5-year plans. The Hydrow rows read for this page show one monthly price and no multi-year plan, so this page does not compare multi-year Hydrow pricing.
A quiet home. The data does not separate them. Hydrow calls the Wave's drag mechanism "whisper-quiet" in its own words. Ergatta's pages state no noise figure. Neither maker gives a decibel number in what was read. Outlets disagree about Ergatta: BarBend says the water tank is loud, while Athletech News (page dated 2025-11-12) calls the water resistance "smooth and fairly quiet." Both pages were read only through summaries. Check a listening sample or return policy before you decide.
A small space. The Wave is 80 x 19 in, and Hydrow sells a Vertical Anchor at $190 for upright storage on the Wave. Ergatta says its rower "folds and stores with no additional equipment," but its length and width are not on the pages read, so the footprints cannot be compared. If space is the main limit, measure from Hydrow's published figure and ask Ergatta for its dimensions. The small spaces guide works through footprints.
A taller or heavier rower. Ergatta states support for up to 6 ft 8 in or 40 in inseam and 500 lb. Hydrow's weight limit and height range were not found on the pages read. Here the data favors Ergatta only because Hydrow's limits could not be checked, not because Hydrow's limits are lower.
Sharing the machine in a household. Hydrow states its $50 membership covers the whole household. The Ergatta rows read do not say how many users a membership covers. No pick on this row.
Hydrow's Wave page also displays badges such as "Best Smart Rowing Machine of 2026" without naming who awarded them, so this page does not repeat them as fact.
Returns and warranty
Both give 30 days. Hydrow's trial terms are a separate article that was not read; its return-policy article says direct purchases not eligible for the trial can be returned within 30 days of delivery, with a $250 return shipping fee deducted. Ergatta's page says "30 day risk-free trial," with a refund offered on the rower and membership. Both warranty pages disagree with their own headlines: Hydrow's Wave page says "Free 1-year warranty" while its support article lists a five-year frame warranty, and Ergatta's headline says "5 year warranty" while its warranty page lists the screen at 1 year. The component rows in the table are the more specific ones.
Where a cheaper rower fits
Neither is the lowest-cost route. Concept2's RowErg is $990 with no membership, and the three-year total is $990. That is $1,005 below the Hydrow Wave's price and $1,209 below the Ergatta Luxe's price before membership. The tradeoff is a longer machine at 96 x 24 in, and Garage Gym Reviews (page updated 2026-06-01) lists basic built-in programming as a con. See Hydrow vs Concept2, Ergatta vs Concept2 and the Ergatta review. For a rower with no maker-confirmed numbers on this site, see Hydrow vs Peloton's rower. If you are still deciding what to ask, how to choose a rowing machine lists five questions.
